Donate to the Jim Jackowski Memorial Fund

- Wednesday, July 29, 2020

Dear Friend,

As you may have heard, we lost our dear friend Jim Jackowski on May 12, 2020. Jim loved Holyoke and Holyoke loved Jim. Whether you knew him as Kow or Coach it is highly likely he helped you out, or made you laugh, or perhaps, both.

We were fortunate to have Jim serve as President of the Board of Directors for the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round for 26 years. A position he loved, for a non-profit he adored. I would be remiss to say it has been strange not having him in meetings with us just in the last few months. He was always smiling, always willing to lend a hand and happiest if you let him sing you a tune.

We want to honor Jim in the best way we know how. A memorial plaque with his name will hang in his honor in our beloved Merry-Go-Round and with your help it will be a larger than life plaque, just like Jim’s personality. We are looking for donations to include your name on the memorial. Your contribution to Jim’s memory will help the Merry-Go-Round in whatever capacity deemed necessary, just as Jim did. It is no secret that times are tough, but with your help we can honor Jim for the many years to come.

We found it fitting to name our donors in categories after Jim’s favorite nicknames:

  • A $100 donation will get you herded with the Kows...
  • A $250 donation will get you in the Coaches Circle...
  • A $500 donation will make you a Business Liaison...
  • and should we need to come up with another nickname for a greater monetary contribution, we could do so.

We hope you will join us in creating a lasting memory of Jim at the Merry-Go-Round. He is terribly missed and nothing will replace him but with your generous donation we can keep his legacy going around and around.

For further questions or information, please contact Laura Wilson at KowsFund@gmail.com.

We want to open up the donations to individuals or groups. If you would like to donate with someone or multiple people, please do! The more the Merry(ier). We could include your group to say, “Class of 1975” or we would even allow “Yankees Fans” but only because it’s for Jim.

Checks can be made to the:

Holyoke Merry-Go-Round

or through PayPal:

Please indicate that your donation is in honor of Jim.

OR please indicate if you wish to remain anonymous.

We thank you in advance for your contribution to our friend.

Police patch, raffle tickets to aid restoration of old carousel horses on Merry-Go-Round

- Friday, March 23, 2018

Holyoke’s public safety departments are selling commemorative patches and raffle tickets for a good cause — renovation of carousel horses on the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round.

Holyoke Police Detective Jared Hamel and Kathie McDonough, the Merry-Go-Round’s operations manager, discussed the cost of restoring a horse, and agreed to create a patch in honor of the Merry-Go-Round’s upcoming 25th anniversary. Hamel then contacted his cousin, Jim Prout, who was the artist responsible for the first two patches. They came up with the perfect patch, 500 copies of which were then produced by Sentry Uniform in Chicopee.

The patches are on sale for $10 from Hamel or at the Merry-Go-Round.

At McDonough’s suggestion, Hamel contacted friend on the Fire Department, Capt. David Rex, to see if that department would also sponsor a horse restoration. Firefighters agreed to sell raffle tickets as a fundraiser for their campaign. Raffle tickets are $25 each, available through the first week in March. A grand prize of $2,500 and several other cash prizes will be drawn at that time.

The fundraiser Holyoke Police patch depicts a carousel horse, with a shadow in the background of a roller coaster track, representing Mountain Park, the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round’s original home.

Holyoke Police & Fire work to save Merry-Go-Round

- Tuesday, March 06, 2018

Holyoke's landmark Merry-Go-Round is in need of some expensive restoration.

Stuffed animals now ride the antique horses that are now too damaged to carry kids at the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round.

When one police officer's son thought those horses deserved to be fixed, he encouraged his dad's department to help.

The fire department wanted to do something too, so they came up with an idea.

"So we kind of brainstormed and we came up with patches, so each department came up with a patch with the carousel emblem in it," said Holyoke Fire Capt. David Rex.

To mark 25 years, the departments are selling specially-made patches as a keepsake to honor a landmark that has meant so much to this community.

The patches that typically fasten to the shoulder of a Holyoke firefighter now have the carousel horse weaved in.

"When it comes to the patches, you're not gonna see these. A couple hundred were made and that was it," Rex added.

It's not only the patches, but a raffle on top of it to really celebrate 25 years at Heritage Park.

For an expensive restoration project, every dollar counts and it's important for the community to keep up with this classic attraction.

"It's an important, important part of Holyoke's history and it's used quite a bit to draw everybody together," Rex said.

The horses need a lot of love and Kathie McDonough, operations manager for the Merry-Go-Round tells Western Mass News she is so grateful for the support from these local heroes.

"A horse for each department one for fire and one for the police, to honor the men and women who serve this community so bravely," McDonough said.

Patches can be purchased for $10 and raffles tickets are $25. The grand prize drawing is this weekend, March 10.

Everything can be purchased at the Merry-Go-Round.
